Current Game
(2024)
This year the coaches of the Holiday Tournament agreed to a new tie-breaker format for 3 way ties: Quarters won. Each of the teams involved in a 3-way tie take all four of their pool play games and tally the number of quarters in which they scored more than their opponent.
Quarters that are tied are not counted for or against. Any Overtime periods, per NFHS rules, are extensions of the 4th Quarter, not separate quarters. If two or three teams have the same number of quarters won, the criteria immediately moves to team cumulative free-throw percentage to break a 3 way tie. Once the top team has been determined, the remaining two teams head-to-head result in pool play determines who receives the 2nd and 3rd spots in the 3-way tie. If the three teams all have different numbers of quarters won, once the three-way tie has been broken and a winner determined by "quarters won", the remaining two teams are sorted by their head-to-head matchup in pool play.
In this year's case in Pool B: Cumberland, Vandalia, and Flora all had 2-2 records. Cumberland won the most quarters in their four pool games with 8. They go to the 3rd place game via this new tie-breaker. The remaining teams are sorted by their head-to-head result in pool play, in which Vandalia defeated Flora. So Vandalia plays for 5th and Flora for 7th place.
